Coffee grounds causing a stir

If you are an avid coffee drinker, stop throwing away used coffee grounds. Once you have brewed your morning cup of coffee, pick up the used coffee grounds to work in the garden.

Coffee grounds are natural fertilisers. Reusing coffee grounds will save you time and money from having to buy fertilisers for your plants.

Give seedlings a nitrogen boost by stirring coffee grounds into soil. Sprinkle coffee grounds around the plants and watch them bloom and grow to new heights.

Also, coffee grounds act as natural pest controllers. Sprinkle some in the garden and you will get rid of pests such as slugs, snails and bugs almost instantly.

Some use for coffee grounds:

‘Blue’ your blooms

Some flowering plants like hydrangeas change colour depending on the pH level of the soil. By adding coffee grounds, it will reduce the pH level and give you bright blue flowers. Both leaf and flower will look and remain healthy for the longest time.

Promoting carrot growth

Mix coffee grounds with the seeds before you plant carrots and it will keep pests and bugs away and boost your harvest. By doing so, you will save yourself a lot of time mending things in the garden. The carrots will likely grow bigger and faster.

Natural fertiliser

Coffee grounds add organic material to the soil, improving drainage, water retention and the process of aeration. Used coffee grounds will help microorganisms beneficial to plant growth thrive as well as attract earthworms, which are a plant’s best friend. Earthworms help increase the amount of air and water that get into the soil and this is important for the plant’s growth.

Enhancing your compost pile

Coffee grounds are filled with phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and copper. They are acidic, and as they degrade they release nitrogen which makes for especially rich compost. They’ll break down and become a fertiliser for plants.

Keeping pests away

Protect your plants by sprinkling the grounds around your garden. Unlike worms, slugs, snails and other bugs don’t like the acidity of coffee and won’t cross the ground as they despise the smell.

Stopping the cats

Cats like to trespass and spoil what is on the ground by stepping on the plants and using your flower and veggie beds as a litter box. Coffee grounds on the soil are excellent cat-repellent. Simply sprinkle some coffee grounds where you don’t want them to walk and they will never walk or roam in your garden.
