Yew Sin-Ee Yi shine to reach quarter-finals of Malaysia Masters

MEN’S doubles Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi continued to impress on the court since being dropped by BAM.

Yesterday, the World No 19 put up another blistering performance to oust China’s World No 11 Han Cheng Kai-Zhou Hao Dong 21-13, 21-18 to reach the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Masters at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.

After their second round win, Yew Sin said: “As independent players, every match is important to us, not just here in Malaysia but everywhere else.

“Of course we want to win more but we don’t want to rush and think too much. We will take things one step at a time.

“For now, we are lacking in funds and we need support for tournament expenses.

“We need to work hard and play well. Only then will more sponsors come in.”

Yew Sin-Ee Yi were axed by BAM from the national team last week after falling out of favour, along with five other players.

Since then, the duo have come under the wings of sports equipment brand Li Ning.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi, who finished second in last year’s Malaysia Masters, are also temporarily training with 2006 Asian Games gold medallist, Tan Boon Heong.

On whether Boon Heong would be their permanent coach, Ee Yi added: “We are still in discussion. For now, Boon Heong is helping us by reading the game from the back and giving us some tips before we take to court.”

Yew Sin-Ee Yi will play South Korea’s Kim Gi Jung-Lee Yong Day today for a place in the semi-finals.
