Rexy slams Aaron-Wooi Yik for poor showings in Europe

KUALA LUMPUR: After jumping to Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik's defence twice, national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky has had enough.

The 55-year-old Indonesian maestro was left fuming after the reigning world champions ended their European tour campaign with a third straight early exit at the Swiss Open.

Yesterday, world No 2 Aaron-Wooi Yik failed to live up to their billing as the top seeds again when they lost 17-21, 21-16, 21-17 to Japan's world No 25 Akira Koga-Taichi Saito in the second round.

Aaron-Wooi Yik were also seeded first for the German Open two weeks ago but were eliminated at the same stage by the same opponents.

At the All England last week, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallists failed to clear the first hurdle, losing for the first time in four meetings to world No 11 Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin.

Their dismal run has led to Rexy issuing a scathing criticism of Aaron-Wooi Yik.

"I shall not comment too much for now because I need to wait for them to come back first," said Rexy, who did not travel with the team to Europe due to visa-related issues.

"I don't know what was running through their minds. Being the world champions and yet not able to go beyond the second round in all three tournaments in Europe is embarrassing.

"Also, they had lost to lower-ranked opponents. I hope they are feeling ashamed of themselves. Based on their ranking, they should at least reach the final.

"Maybe they're still basking in the glory of being the world champions, so in their mind, they still feel they are still at the top of the world."

For the record, Aaron-Wooi Yik only missed quarter-final spots on three occasions out of 12 tournaments last year.

But in just six starts, they have failed to go beyond the last 16 on four occasions, including at the season-opening Malaysia Open.

Their best result was finishing runner-up at the India Open.

Aaron-Wooi Yik will have a month to get things right before returning to action at the Asia Championships in Dubai from April 25-30.
