Yew Sin-Ee Yi lift the gloom at Malaysia Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Independent men's doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi lifted the spirits of the national camp when they stunned Denmark's Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen today, securing a spot in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Open.

World No. 12 Yew Sin-Ee Yi converted their fifth match point to seal the nail-biting contest 21-10, 11-21, 24-22, reaching their third consecutive last-eight appearance in the tournament.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi will next face either Japan's Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi or Scotland's Alexander Dunn-Adam Hall for a chance to advance to the semi-finals.

The victory brought much-needed joy to local fans after none of the Malaysian competitors managed to progress in the other fixtures of the day.

In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei lost to Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-15, 24-22, while all three mixed doubles pairs - Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, and Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See - were also eliminated.

Tang Jie-Ee Wei were knocked out 24-22, 21-14 by Japan's Hikori Midorikawa-Natsu Saito; Soon Huat-Shevon went down 21-15, 21-12 to Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand; Peng Soon-Yee See were eliminated 21-14, 21-14 by Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin of China.
