Afiq-Khairul break Asian para cycling record

GOLD COAST: Visually impaired cyclist Afiq Afify Rizan and his pilot Khairul Adha Rasol smashed their own Asian record in the 1km time trial today but it was not enough for them to finish on the Commonwealth Games podium at the Anna Meares Velodrome.

The Malaysians clocked 1:03.249s to surpass their Asian record of 1:04.192 set at last month's Para Cycling Track World Championships in Rio.

"Frankly, we were aiming for our Asian record here. I hope we can maintain this performance for the Indonesia Asian Para Games later this year.

"Our ride was smooth today and there were no mistakes. However, I had a problem with my pedal which fell off during the race but I managed to maintain rhythm," said Afiq.

Scotland's Neil Fachie and his pilot Matt Rotherham won the gold in 1:00.065, followed by Wales' James Ball-Peter Mitchell (1:01.512) and Australia's Brad Henderson-Tom Clarke (1:01.512).
