Tunku Ismail likely to stay on as FAM president

KUALA LUMPUR: Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim is expected to make a 'U-turn' on his decision to resign as Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president on March 15.

Appeals by many quarters of the local football fraternity may see Tunku Ismail continue to helm FAM.

The decision on whether Tunku Ismail will reverse his decision could come at the annual Football Malaysia LLP (FMLLP) congress in Johor Baru on Sunday.

Former FAM disciplinary committee chairman Kamarudin Abdullah believes that Tunku Ismail will take into consideration the clamour for him to continue when he makes his decision.

Kamaruddin said it is too early for Tunku Ismail to resign because he still had much to do to achieve the mission of transforming the country's football landscape.

"I expect Tunku Ismail to remain (as FAM president). In fact, it's too early for him to resign, just a year, if it had been one term then that's another story.

"Many people want him to stay, so he will definitely consider it carefully. He just needs to be patient and not care too much about criticism on social media.

"The president is an important person, not an ordinary exco member and we cannot run away from being criticised. So, only constructive criticism should be taken onboard, "he said when contacted on Saturday.

Tunku Ismail's sudden decision to resign stems from the poor performance of the national team, whose Fifa ranking plunged to 178th, the worst in national football history.

FMLLP is also expected to announce a decision on the appeal of fines handed to 10 teams from the Super League and Premier League for failing to complete the registration after the deadline on Feb 3.

Super League teams Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, PKNS and Selangor were fined RM1.5 million, while six teams from the Premier League, Sarawak, Penang, Kuantan, Police, MIFA and UKM were fined RM500,000.
