M-League must first tackle unpaid salary issue, says Khyril

KHYRIL Muhymeen Zambri (pic) believes the M-League has the potential to become among the best in Asia if it can weed out salary issues from the competition.

The former international signed with Perlis in December 2018, but left the club and joined Selangor after the Northern Lions were suspended from the M-League in February last year due to their debts.

The 32-year-old claimed that Perlis have not settled his salary arrears.

“Many teams tend to overspend in their quest to win titles. And this leads to teams being unable to meet their financial obligation to pay their players.

“The only way the M-League can become one of the best in this region is by weeding out salary issues.

“M-League teams are excited ahead of the new season, but I hope they will invest on players within their budgets.”

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) and the Malaysia Football League (MFL), who are both led by president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, introduced the Economic Control Programme (ECP) late last year to address the financial woes of teams ahead of the upcoming season.

The objective of the ECP is to keep teams in good financial shape by adhering to a specified spending mechanism.

MFL are targeting a debt-free M-League within five years.

Super League’s Police and Melaka and Premier League’s Kelantan are now in the headlines as they have been handed the ultimatum to settle their debts or face points’ deduction in the new season.

FAM will issue a press statement regarding the three teams tomorrow.

But for Khyril, the midfielder is unlikely to receive his salary arrears from Perlis as the club are not playing in the M-League and are currently serving a Fifa transfer ban for failing to settle the wages of a former foreign player.

“I have not heard anything from Perlis,” said Khyril, who has been retained by Selangor for the new season.

On the new season, Khyril said the current Selangor team look more solid compared to the 2019 squad.

“We are preparing well, and chemistry among the players is good.

“Last year, there were problems between some players and the coach (B. Satiananthan) but these troublemakers have been dropped from the team for the new season.

“With centre-back Taylor Regan appointed as captain, I believe the team will have stability as the Australian is quite outspoken and can organise the team well during matches,” he added.
