Shahrel vows to get out of Brazilians' shadows

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak right winger Shahrel Fikri Fauzi believes 2020 will be the year for him to shine in the Super League.

Shahrel, 26, admitted he didn’t make much of an impact last season after he had to vie with Brazilian Ronaldo Henrique Silva, and scoring only two goals the entire season.

As he tried to be a regular in the Bos Gaurus’ first eleven, Shahrel also had to contend with another Brazilian in Raianderson Da Costa Morais.

“What’s important is for me to prove that I am capable of playing in the first eleven although I have to compete with foreign players and also to score as many goals,” said national player Shahrel.

“I managed to play well during the pre-season friendlies and scored goals. I think the coach (Mehmet Durakovic) has a bigger role for me this season.

“In the first game against Terengganu, I had the chance to be on the main team and it was a good start because we won (3-1)”.

Perak will play Selangor in a Super League match on Sunday, and Shahrel hopes to play a main role against the Red Giants.

“Based on Perak’s current form, it will be a close match against Selangor,” he said.

Perak defeated Terengganu 3-1 in their Super League opener last week while Selangor subdued Pahang 2-1.
