A trophy for the 'lost generation'

Amid talks of the "lost generation" of potential footballers following the cancellation of several competitions, FAM are now looking at reviving the FAM Cup.

This came about after FAM scrapped the President's Cup, Youth Cup and M3 League for the second year running.

There is concern in the football fraternity that this will adversely stunt football development, and deprive talented players of opportunities.

This has led to FAM coming up with various measures that will be presented at a committee meeting to determine the best move forward for next year.

FAM competitions committee chairman Firdaus Mohamed said they are looking at ways to help players affected by two seasons of "football inactivity ".

One of the best ways, FAM feel, is reviving the FAM Cup.

The FAM Cup, which was founded in 1951, was replaced by the M3 League in 2019.

Firdaus is aware that due to the financial constraints of state FAs, forming another professional club would not be easy for them.

But he felt that the return of the FAM Cup, amateur in nature, would enable the "lost generation" to have a platform to perform, and showcase their talent.

"On a state level, many cannot afford to play in the M3 League.

"But when we reintroduce the FAM Cup, it will revert to its original format of being played in a knockout manner," said Firdaus.

"The FAM Cup could also serve as a platform to talent scout.

"It was supposed to be reintroduced this year along with the Merdeka Cup, but due to Covid-19, this was near impossible.

"If we look at past years, many national players were found at the FAM Cup.

"The competition was a success story for those who did not even go through the major competitions but earned their places in the national team because they were standouts in the FAM Cup."

On the cancellation of several tournaments, Firdaus said this came about after FAM held several meetings with the National Security Council this year.

"There were so many factors that played into cancelling the competitions for two straight years. I think many also don't look at the 'calming period'.

"For example, if swimming pools are allowed to be opened, we can't straight away jump into the water, we need to check the level first, make sure the water is clean and such," said Firdaus.

"There are also (players') contracts which usually end around October-November.

"There are monetary constraints, when there are salary issues happening in Super League and Premier League, we can imagine what it would be like at the lower levels.

"We do not want to plan something for the sake of having it, but as the country transitions from pandemic to endemic status, it should be no issue for the FAM Cup to go ahead next year where everyone will be prepared."
