'Give Pan Gon a chance'

FORMER national team captain Zaquan Adha Radzak has urged fans not to make negative comments about FAM's appointment of South Korean coach Kim Pan Gon.

The Negri Sembilan striker said football fans should have belief in Pan Gon.

Zaquan admitted that it will be a tough start for Pan Gon as he is just getting to know Malaysian football and is not familiar with any of the players personally.

"As somebody who used to play for the national team, I know whoever is appointed as the head coach, will have to bear a heavy responsibility. And it is not easy when he is from overseas," said Zaquan.

"As he is new to Malaysia, I believe he will have to evaluate the players from all aspects.

"I hope all parties (including fans) take this situation positively and not expect bad things. We need to have trust in Pan Gon."

FAM appointed Pan Gon to fill the vacancy left by Tan Cheng Hoe who resigned last month after Malaysia's poor results in the AFF Cup in Singapore. Malaysia beat minnows Cambodia 3-1, Laos 4-0 but lost 3-0 to Vietnam and 4-1 to Indonesia.

Pan Gon, who was Korea FA's vice president between 2017 and 2021, coached the Hong Kong national team in 2009-2010 and 2012-2017.

The 53-year-old will be coming to Kuala Lumpur early next month with four staff: an assistant, a goalkeeping coach, a fitness trainer and an analyst.
