Pan Gon vows to make Harimau fierce again

Finally new national chief coach Kim Pan Gon was unveiled to the Malaysian media yesterday by FAM after five days of quarantine.

It is a good time as any to introduce the South Korean to Malaysian fans with his country having just qualified for a record 10th successive World Cup Finals.

FAM are looking to Pan Gon to do something for Malaysia who are still nowhere to clearing the early hurdles in World Cup qualification after so many decades.

FAM must have been impressed by Pan Gon's record. After all, he marshaled a lowly ranked Hong Kong to a shock 2-0 win over Malaysia in an Asian Cup qualifier in 2017.

Pan Gon, 53, made several promises, including bringing Malaysian football to a whole new level, during his first press conference here yesterday.

Pan Gon said firstly he wants to build a solid foundation for the national team as he felt that Harimau Malaya are weak mentally and physically.

"I believe the national team have great potential that we can make full use of.

"We will build the foundation first, then move on to long-term goals, the World Cup stage.

"I believe that if everyone is united, support and trust us, we will be able to reach our goals.

"I will always do my best to fight for the name of Malaysia," said Pan Gon.

The Korean coach said he is aware that he has less than three months to prepare Malaysia for the Asian Cup final round qualifiers.

Malaysia were announced yesterday as one of the six host nations of the Asian qualifiers. The others include India, Kuwait, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia and Uzbekistan for the East Asian region.

"I need to take time to get to know every single (national) player, I will try to watch as many (M-League) matches as possible. If I cannot go there directly, I will get an analysis of each player because it is important to know them," he said.

Pan Gon's arrival in Malaysia was well received by local fans who are hoping for a change in fortunes following the national team's failure at last December's AFF Cup.

On FAM's much criticised naturalisation programme, Pan Gon said he will select the best players that Malaysia have to offer regardless of nationality.

"We will select the best players available. I don't care if they are local, naturalised or heritage players. I will pick the best to help Malaysia."

Pan Gon joined a list of South Korean coaches helming national teams in Southeast Asia. Park Hang Seo coaches Vietnam while Shin Tae Yong is in charge of Indonesia.

Pan Gon said he respects his South Korean counterparts but he aims to create his own football history.

"I know a lot about these coaches and their performances at Southeast Asian level. I highly respect them but I am who I am.

"I will build my own football history here. I want to produce results for Malaysia."

Pan Gon has also brought his own supporting team of assistant coach Pau Marti Vicente, goalkeeping coach Cho Junho, fitness coach Dr. Gokhan Kandemir and performance analyst Lim Jae Cun to Malaysia.
