Beefed-up Deer set modest targets

IT is an exciting time for Negri Sembilan on their return to the Super League this season.

After winning the Premier League last season, Negri have beefed up their squad with quality new signings for their Super League challenge.

However, they are not setting ambitious targets.

Negri, who last played in the Super League in 2018, eye a mid-table finish, although captain Zaquan Adha Radzak has a different dream.

The former international wants to help Negri finish in the top-five bracket.

"I think we have quality players to achieve it. Furthermore, we did well in recent warm-up matches," said Zaquan at the unveiling of Negri's new kit in Seremban yesterday.

Negri recorded six wins, three draws and one loss during their preseason.

Coach K. Devan has retained 12 players from last season and strengthened the squad with several top local and foreign names.

Their new foreign signings are Herold Goulon (France), Omid Nazari (Philippines), Matheus Alves (Brazil), David Mawutor (Tajikistan) and Adetu Kossi (Ghana).

"As captain, I want to help Negri do better than expected. Of course, the Super League is tough, but once we get our rhythm, we will be OK," said Zaquan.

"We have signed players like Goulon and Alves who have played in the Super League, and this will be a boost for us to settle in quickly."

Negri chairman Tunku Syed Razman Tunku Syed Idrus Al-Qadri said: "We had an eventful season in 2021, but this year, it will be a new challenge in the Super League.

"Of course, we do not just want to make the numbers. We also hope to do well in the FA Cup and the Malaysia Cup.

"If we have the luck, we knows, maybe we can win one of the Cups," he said.

Negri will travel to Likas on Friday to face Ong Kim Swee's Sabah in their opening Super League match.
