Juniors begin preparations for Under-17 Asian Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: National under-17 team coach Osmera Omaro hopes his players will be quick to adapt when they join the squad's first centralised training camp of the year.

The camp will be held at Akademi Mokhtar Dahari (AMD) in Gambang on Feb 1-12. It is part of their preparations for the Under-17 Asian Cup in Thailand (Jun 15-Jul 2).

He disclosed that a total of 40 players have been selected for the camp, 26 are from AMD while the rest are from across the country.

Osmera said a playing tour in Japan and Thailand has also been planned for them.

"We have also called up 14 players from outside of AMD, we want to take a closer look at them," said Osmera.

"We have had these (14) on our radar for some time now. There, however, have not been any competitions recently (to watch them play) so we called them up for the camp.

"I hope they can adapt quickly and not be overawed by this call-up. They just need to do what they have already been doing.

"FA of Malaysia (FAM) have planned a good tour for the team, I believe this is important for us to prepare to play in the Asian Cup."

Osmera's squad qualified by the Asian Cup after winning their group in the qualifiers in Bogor, Indonesia, last year.

Malaysia will join other group winners - Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Vietnam, Australia, Tajikistan, Iran and Uzbekistan - in the tournament proper. Making up the 16-team competition are the best group runners-up South Korea, China, Afghanistan, India, Thailand and Laos.

This will be Malaysia's sixth appearance in the competition after previous outings in 2004, 2008, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Their best finish was reaching the quarter-finals in 2014 when it was held in Thailand.

The top-four finishers in the Asian Cup will qualify for the Fifa Under-17 World Cup in Peru (Nov 10-Dec 2).
