I do not want to have regrets, says Harimau Malaya's Brendan

KUALA LUMPUR: When Brendan Gan retires from football, the national midfielder wants to be able to look back and have no regrets.

The 35-year-old is an inspiration to many, coming back from two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and beating testicular cancer.

But, the Australian-Malaysia wants to be known as a footballer first rather than for the other challenges he endured in the last 15 years.

"I've thought and questioned myself about the kind of legacy I want to leave behind. I never wanted to be defined by big issues or downfalls in my career because I've always wanted to see myself as more.

"More than just someone who can fight through challenges or overcome hurdles. I prefer to be recognised as a football player based on my positive contributions on the field rather than for overcoming personal obstacles to return to the pitch.

"My roller-coaster career could be an inspiration to many when they pick apart my story and apply it, which I understand and I'm grateful for."

"But, I want to give it my all until there's nothing left for me to regret by the time I'm done. When it comes time to move away from football, I want to look back and say I can inspire people to be their best or fight through challenges."

The Selangor captain, who is married to Elyse, is blessed with two children — Koa Brooklyn (four years old) and Willow Nahla (one year old).

Brendan would like his children to be able to look back on his career and life story as their source of power.

"I want to be seen as a footballer who has plenty more to give and be on par with my teammates.

"I think I've already proven myself as a footballer, but I still have a lot more to offer at this point in my career.

Brendan made his Harimau Malaya debut in the World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia in 2016. He has 33 caps and one goal.

He missed 14 games with the national team from June 2021 to June 2022 as he was undergoing chemotherapy.
