Blind Malaysian fan goes to Doha to support Harimau Malaya

DOHA: A blind Malaysian fan has travelled to Qatar to support the national football team at the Asian Cup.

Muhammad Ridzwan, who was born blind, was accompanied to Doha by his older brother, Raff Iskandar Erman Efendi.

Ridzwan, 27, said Raff has helped him realise his dream of supporting Harimau Malaya on a higher stage.

"Everyone is here to watch, but I want to hear Malaysia win," said Ridzwan, the youngest of five.

Raff, 31, said he usually takes Ridzwan's hands and simulate what has happened especially, when a goal is scored, for his brother to get a picture of the situation.

"Usually I take my brother's hand and draw images with it and commentate. He will cheer. When we have a shot at goal but don't score, we just reach out together.

"Nothing beats a real live experience and Ridzwan isn't like the others who just sit and listen," said Raff.

Ridzwan said: "It's the special feeling of being at the stadium. Sometimes the excitement and tension is too much, and my brother can't continue his explanation to me. Then someone else would continue commentating to me.

"Usually when I go to the stadium, Malaysia doesn't win, so I'm hoping to end this bad streak," said Ridzwan an hour before Malaysia played Jordan in their Group E opener at Al Janoub Stadium.

Unfortunately, Ridzwan didn't hear much good about Malaysia yesterday as Harimau Malaya had a quiet game, and were mauled 4-0 by Jordan.
