Now Zikri and Co can learn from senor Garrido

KUALA LUMPUR: The national Under-23 football team have gone through four coaches in six years.

And FAM hopes that their latest coach, Spaniard Juan Torres Garrido, will deliver at next month's Under-23 Asian Cup in Doha.

Since Ong Kim Swee stepped down as the national Under-23 head coach (from 2010-2015) and 2017-2019), the others that came didn't last long.

Australian Brad Maloney was in charge from only 2021 to 2022. Then E. Elavarasan took over for a year before going over to the senior team as Kim Pan Gon's assistant. Garrido was given the job last year.

National Under-23 right-back Ahmad Zikri Khalili said every coach that he has been under since 2021 has his own style and tactical approach.

"As a player, I need to be able to adapt to the different coaches' ways."

Zikri said having played in the Under-23 Asian Cup in 2022 under Maloney, he could notice the difference in tactics between the Australian and Spaniard Garrido.

"This year's Under-23 Asian Cup is different from that of two years ago because there are new players and coaches."

"Between Garrido and Elavarasan, they have a different approach too. As players, we just need to adapt."

In the Under-23 Asian Cup two years ago, Zikri played in all three group matches which saw Malaysia losing 4-1 to South Korea, 3-0 to Thailand and 2-0 to Vietnam.
