Former Sports Minister says national body needs an overhaul

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is calling for an overhaul of the FA of Malaysia (FAM).

While dispelling talk of his candidacy for the FAM presidency for the 2025-2029 term, Khairy said there is a need for change if the nation is to see substantial progress and development in football.

"This is my personal conviction. It's high time for FAM to undergo a transformation. While the current management has undoubtedly contributed, we aspire to witness significant advancement and growth in the next five to 10 years.

"Thus, I firmly believe that change is imperative," said Khairy, who is a former FAM vice president (2007-2010).

There has been speculation that Khairy would challenge incumbent FAM president Datuk Hamidin Amin.

When asked to suggest a candidate for the FAM presidency, Khairy refrained from naming individuals, and instead said the leader should have a background in corporate governance.

"We should consider candidates with extensive experience beyond sports administration. Ideally, someone from the corporate sphere, given their robust corporate governance practices.

"However, let me clarify that I don't fault the current FAM setup. I simply believe it could benefit from refinement. With effective leadership, vision and execution, I'm confident we can propel our national team to new heights," said Khairy.

The 48-year-old KJ is well known in Malaysian sports, having spearheaded initiatives such as the National Football Development Programme during his tenure as Sports Minister from 2013 to 2018, which also led to the establishment of the Mokhtar Dahari Academy.

Khairy remains active in the sporting arena. He hosts a popular podcast, "Keluar Sekejap", and is an adviser to football powerhouse Johor Darul Ta'zim.

Khairy, who also serves as the vice president of the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), indulges in cycling during his leisure time.
