KUALA NERUS: After its success in promoting cycling as an active sport, Terengganu is now looking at grooming champion motorcycle racers.
This comes by way of the motorcycle racing track at the Gong Badak sports complex, which was opened several months ago.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said that the track not only helps keep mat rempits away from public streets, but also helps groom future motorcycle racers.
“I am happy that this track is finally operational. Youths can now test their riding skills in a safe manner and learn the finer points of racing from experts,” he added.
The track, adjacent to the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium, has received kudos from various quarters, who have also praised the state government for making the long-overdue track a reality.
Former Setiu district youth council chairman Zokri Othman said the track keeps youths from riding dangerously on the streets, endangering themselves and other users.
“I am confident that the track will offer a host of opportunities for youths to organise their racing activities in a proper, healthy and disciplined manner,” he added.
Retiree Muhammad Roslan Zakaria said that Razif has been creative and innovative in helping expedite the construction of the track for the benefit of youths.
“This is the kind of leadership we need, to have more benefits for the rakyat, especially the younger generation,” he added.
One of the youths who has benefitted from the track is Mohd Amirul Asjad Fadzlee, 23, from Chukai, Kemaman.
“Ever since the track was opened, my friends and I often look forward to taking part in the various activities hosted there.
“We don’t have to be involved in illegal road racing anymore,” he said.
The 1.35km track, on 2.4 hectares of land, can accommodate up to 25,000 spectators around the circuit.
While races can be held for cub prix, the track is a favourite for sprint tests and drag racing along a 0.95km stretch.
