ASTANA: National junior team sprint trio Shariz Effendi Shahrin, Khairil Nizam Rasol and Mohd Fadhil Zonis set a new Asian and national record en route to sixth place in the World Junior Championships in Kazakhstan.

The trio clocked 46.095s, with Fadhil running a sub-17 seconds anchor leg.

The time meant the local-based trio under the guidance of coach Junaidi Nasir were now within 1.5 seconds of the senior national record of 44.7s set by Azizulhasni Awang, Josiah Ng and Rizal Tisin at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, the closest a junior trio has ever come to matching the senior national mark.
