National shooter Eddy Chew sets new national record at Subang meet

SUBANG: National shooter, Eddy Chew proved he is in fine form ahead of the Sea Games after breaking the national record en route to winning the men's 10 metre air pistol event at the National Shooting Championships today.

The Batu-Pahat born fired 242.2 in the eight-man elimination final to clinch the gold at the Subang Shooting Range and erase the former national mark of 237.4 set by Choo Wen Yan at the Tun Haniff Trophy in March.

National teammates Jonathan Wong (240.9) and Wen Yan (215.9) came in second and third.

Eddy, who topped the morning qualifying session on 576, said he did not expect to break the national record today.

"I felt calm and relaxed. There was no pressure, I just focused on giving it my best, one shot at a time," said the 22-year-old.

"It feels good to break the national record, I feel I have been quite consistent this year."

Eddy, Jonathan and Wen Yan will compete in the 50m free pistol event today.
