Badrul and Co aim to put the brakes on Thai speed demons

SPRINTER Badrul Hisyam Manap is intent on ending Thailand's dominance in the 4x100m event at the Sea Games.

The 20-year-old said he is unfazed by Thailand's low-profile approach ahead of the Kuala Lumpur games next month.

Badrul and teammates Muhammad Haiqal Hanafi, Jonathan Nyepa as well as Khairul Hafiz Jantan broke the national 4x100m record en route to gold at the Vietnam Open earlier this week.

"We are very grateful to be able to break the national record in Vietnam and we want to give the Sea Games our best shot," said Badrul.

"We have strong team spirit. However, there is still room to improve in certain areas. There is still time for us to do so.

"Thailand have not been competing in many meets of late and could be focused on preparing for the Sea Games.

"We cannot promise any medals but want to prove we can beat Thailand, our traditional rivals, on home soil."

Malaysia last won the 4x100m gold in 1969. Since then, Thailand have won the event at every edition of the games except 1985 (Thailand) and 2009 (Laos).
