KL2017: Malaysian wushu team on course to deliver six gold target

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian wushu team ended the morning session on the second day of competition at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) with one gold medal, two silver and one bronze at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).

Yeap Wai Kin, delivered the first gold on Monday bringing up the overall tally so far to four, when he scored 9.68 points in the men’s qiangshu event.

Teammate Wong Weng Son came in second on 9.65 followed by Indonesia’s Muhammad Daffa Golden Boy on 9.63.

Meanwhile in the women’s qiangshu final, Malaysia’s Phoon Eyin lost out on the gold medal by 0.01 points to Vietnam’s Thuy Vi Duong who notched 9.67 points.

Myanmar’s Sandy Oo settled for the bronze on 9.65 points.

In the men’s optional daoshu-gunshu final, Khaw Jun Lim’s combined score of 19.29 points earned him a bronze medal.

Singapore’s Jowen Lim bagged the gold medal on 19.37 followed by Indonesia’s Achmad Hulaefi.

“I am very happy with the team’s performance so far. It is only the second day and we already have four gold medals.

“Hopefully we get to perform well in the remaining events,” said Malaysia’s team coach Lim Yew Fai.

The Malaysian contingent are hoping to win six gold medals from wushu, equalling their best haul at the 2001 edition in Kuala Lumpur.
