KL2017: Loss of focus costs Johnathan Wong gold in men's 50m pistol

KUALA LUMPUR: A last minute loss of focus cost Johnathan Wong the gold medal in the men's 50m pistol event at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games today.

Johnathan settled for silver in the event on 223.5, just 1.7 points behind gold medal winner Natphanlert Auapinyakul of Thailand.

The 24-year-old said it was a marginal improvement from the bronze he won in Singapore two years ago.

"I did not start that well but improved until it was down to the two of us (with Natphanlert)," said Johnathan.

"He fired first and then I heard the crowd cheering. I immediately lost focus.

"Silver is a good achievement but I had hoped to win the gold, especially as we are playing at home in Malaysia. I tried."

Myanmar's Kyaw Swar Win finished third with 205.2 while Olympic silver medalist Hoang Xuan Vinh of Vietnam was an early casualty in the elimination format final.
