M'sia's Weng Son hits gold at Wushu World Championships in Russia

KUALA LUMPUR: Wong Weng Son is finally a world champion in wushu.

The Negri Sembilan-born athlete fulfilled his ambition by winning the men's jianshu (sword) gold medal at the Wushu World Championships in Kazan, Russia on Sunday.

Weng Son, a gold medallist at last year's Taolu World Cup and Asian Championships, posted 9.64 points.

South Korea's Lee Ha Sung took the silver medal on 9.60, while Malaysia's Yeap Wai Kin finished third with 9.53.

For Weng Son, the title means a lot, as he only managed silver medals in the jianshu and Qiangshu (spear) events, losing to Wai Kin at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in August.

"It is a great achievement to land a title in wushu's most prestigious world event," said Weng Son yesterday.

Teammate Tan Cheong Min capped a fine performance in the women's nangun (southern style) for the bronze medal with 9.59 points.

China's He Jianxin won with a 9.62 total, followed by Indonesia's Juwita Niza Wasni on 9.60.
