Bowler Nur Amirah strikes silver at Asian Youth Championships in Manila

KUALA LUMPUR: A split in her final frame denied bowler Nur Amirah Auni Azman the girls' singles gold medal at the Asian Youth Championships at Coronado Lanes in Manila on Monday.

The 20-year-old was mathematically ahead going into her final frame of the sixth game where she needed to spare a split in her final throw.

However, Nur Amirah failed to achieve it as she took the silver medal with a 1,321 total, nine pins behind gold medallist Kim Ye Sol of South Korea.

Japan's Shion Izumune finished third with 1,299 pinfalls.

"Nur Amirah was mentally strong today and managed to keep pace with Ye Sol before taking the lead by three pins in the ninth frame of the sixth game.

"However, she posted a split in her final frame and subsequently could not spare.

"She, however, fought well and we are proud of her," said team manager Maradona Chok on Monday.

Fateh Najihah Ahmad Faik was Malaysia's next best performer at seventh position on 1,210, followed by Nora Lyana Nastasia Norkamal (ninth - 1,201) and debutante Nur Ameerahusna Aznel (17th - 1,105).

The event continues with the boys' singles later today.
