KUALA LUMPUR: The national exponents produced their best-ever result at the Wushu World Junior Championships by winning seven gold, five silver and nine bronze in the Brazil edition which ended on Monday.
In the Under-18 class, Ang Qi Yue emerged victorious in the boys' qiangshu with a score of 9.32.
In the Under-15 category, Bryan Ti clinched the nanquan gold on 9.05 and also won bronze medals in the nandao and nangun. Danish Aizad took the gunshu (9.15) gold in the same age-group.
The Under-13 class saw Alvyn Toh clinch the jianshu (8.79) gold while Wong Jie Ann won the qiangshu (8.92).
Wong Kai Xin and Queek Yan Chee emerged victorious in the girls' daoshu (8.87) and qiangshu (8.87) respectively.
Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) president Chong Kim Fatt said the juniors’ performance bodes well for the future of the sport in the country.
"I am very happy that every team member managed to win a medal. This is our best ever achievement at the World Junior Championships," said Kim Fatt.
"Hopefully, this will have a positive effect on our senior team who will be competing at the Asian Games soon. It will be tough but we hope to win some medals there."
Malaysia did not win any medals at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.
The silver medallists in Brazil were Tan Cheong Wan (boys’ under-18 daoshu), Kelly Chin (girls’ under-15 jianshu), Lee Hui Xian (Under-18 nanquan) and Mandy Chen (Under-15 taijijian and taijiquan).
In addition to Bryan, the other exponents who won bronze were Tan Cheong Wan (under-18) in the ' changquan and gunshu, Jie Ann (Under-13) in the changquan, Tan Cheong Wan-Ang Qi Yue (Under-18) in the duilian, Ang Qi Yue (Under-18) in the jianshu, all in the boys category.
The girls delivered bronze through Tammy Tan (Under-18) in the qiangshu and Wong Kai Xin (Under-13) in the changquan.
