Malaysian bowlers not well oiled for success

THE national bowlers must learn to overcome the tough oiling patterns at Coronado Lanes, Starmall EDSA-Shaw in Manila if they hope to win more than just the one gold Timmy Tan rolled down on opening day.

And they had better be fast-learners, having ended up with two bronze in men and women’s doubles yesterday.

Tun Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam-Rafiq Ismail fought back from an early hiccup to clinch bronze with a 2,556 total, finishing behind Indonesia’s Billy Islam-Hardy Rachmadian (2,592) and Thailand’s Atchariya Cheng-Surasak Manuwong (2,564) in men’s doubles.

In women’s doubles, Esther Cheah-Sin Li Jane finished third on 2,458, behind Indonesia’s Sharon Limansantoso-Tannya Roumimper (2,552) and Singapore’s New Hui Fen-Shayna Ng (2,476).

Rafiq said that he and Tun Hakim had to make changes to their ball-release after posting low scores in the opening two games.

‘Luckily, we managed to recover for the bronze. I think we did okay as we finished just 36 pins behind the champions.

‘I hope that with these changes, we will do better in the coming events,’said Rafiq.

Meanwhile, former world amateur snooker champions Moh Keen Hoo-Lim Kok Leong reached the semi-finals of the men’s doubles after beating Laos’ Minalavong Suriya-Sakbieng Siththideth 3-2 at Manila Hotel’s Tent Hall yesterday.

‘Keen Hoo-Kok Leong bounced back from 2-1 down to seal victory and are now assured of bronze,’ said team manager Adrain Tan.

In the short track speed event, Dione Tan clocked 1:41.674 to finish third in the 1,000m race behind Singapore’s Cheyenne Goh 1:39.272) and Indonesia’s Nur Indah Ratu (1:41.314).
