Connie impresses in Kazakhstan

Connie Chu produced a superb performance to win the women's discus event at the Qasanov Memorial Athletics Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Saturday.

The 27-year-old emerged victorious after recording 43.65 metres in her final attempt ahead of Uzbekistan's Yuliana Shukina (38.90m) and Kazakhstan's Alina Vorontsova (36.78m).

Meanwhile, sprinter Jonathan Nyepa clinched silver in the men's 100m by clocking 10.64 seconds.

Vitaliy Zems of Kazakhstan won the blue ribbon event in 10.57s while Ildar Akhmadiev of Tajikistan finished third in 10.75s.

In the men's 100m hurdles, Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian clocked 14.18s for the bronze in the three-field competition.

Kazakhstan's David Yefremov (13.66s) easily won the event, followed by compatriot Yevgeniy Prokudin (13.84s).

Malaysia's Ilham Suhaimi took fourth in the men's 400m by clocking 48.47s, while Yap Sean Yee finished fifth in the women's long jump after clearing 1.80m.

Team manager Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh was happy with the results.

"They did well in their first overseas competition in more than a year.

"However, I feel sorry for men's long jumper Andre Anura Anuar who had to withdraw from his event after picking up a hamstring injury," Wan Hisham told. --Bernama
