Eain Yow-Ivan close in on squash medal

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Ng Eain Yow-Ivan Yuen inched closer towards a medal finish in the men's squash doubles event after reaching the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games yesterday.

The joint fifth-eighth seeds put up a polished performance to oust surprise package Velavan Senthilkumar-Abhay Singh of India 11-8, 11-8 in the quarter-finals at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre.

The Indian pair had claimed the scalp of joint third-fourth seeds Alan Clyne-Dougie Kempsell of Scotland in the second round a day earlier.

But Eain Yow-Ivan were determined to make a breakthrough and they barely put a foot wrong to secure the win.

This is the first time a Malaysian pair reached the last four of the Games and the Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia's focus on doubles seems to be paying off.

This came after both the women's pairs of Rachel Arnold-Aifa Azman and Noor Ainaa Amani Ampandi-Chan Yiwen eliminated much higher ranked opponents to reach the semi-finals on Friday.

Eain Yow-Ivan will take on England's top seeds James Willstrop-Declan James for a place in the final.

The English pair were also on song as they eliminated Australia's Cameron Pilley-Rhys Dowling 11-7, 11-4.
