Terengganu wary of minnows Perlis

KUALA LUMPUR: Defending champions Terengganu are wary of the threat posed by a spirited Perlis in the Agong's Cup rugby competition.

The two sides are set to lock horns in the quarter-finals at the TUDM Stadium in Shah Alam on Saturday.

Minnows Perlis sneaked into the last-eight on score difference. They defeated Kelantan but lost to Kuala Lumpur (25-22) and title contenders Royal Malaysian Police (38-21) in Pool D, arguably the toughest group in the competition.

Terengganu Rugby Association president Amir Amri Mohamad believes that overlooking Perlis' ability could cost them dearly.

"On paper, Perlis may be the underdogs but they actually have a good side with a mix of experience and youth," said Amir.

"Their strength lies in their forwards. They have players such as Amin Jamaluddin and their Fijian imports.

"This is an incredibly spirited group of players which we cannot afford to take lightly."

Former national player Amin had played for TV Pforzheim in the German top-tier in recent seasons.

Terengganu had defeated 2017 champions Johor (30-17) and Melaka (78-3) to top Pool A.

If Terengganu are able to overcome Perlis, they will meet the winners of the Armed Forces versus Selangor match which will also be played at the TUDM Stadium.

The other quarter-finals will see Putrajaya meeting Pahang while Police play Johor for a spot in the final four.
