Kwan strikes gold in World Junior Wushu

KUALA LUMPUR: Kwan Yin Jie clinched Malaysia's first gold at the World Junior Wushu Championships in Tangerang, Indonesia, today.

The Kuala Lumpur exponent accumulated 9.216 points in the boys' daoshu (broadsword) in the 13-15 age category.

Malaysia also won five silver and one bronze after two days of competition in the taolu (non sparring and weapons) categories.

Wong Kai Xin delivered the first medal for Malaysia on Wednesday when she won silver in the girls' changquan in the 16-18 age category.

The other silver medals were contributed by Kelly Chin in the girls' jianshu in the 16-18 age category; Queek Yenn Tinn in the girls' daoshu in the 13-15 age category, Alvyn Toh in the boys' jianshu in the 13-15 age category and Lee Ronn in the boys' daoshu 9-12 age category.

Kai Xin also won bronze in the girls' daoshu in the 16-18 age category.

Genevieve Goh finished fifth in the girls' daoshu in the 9-12 age division while Hew Wei Peng was seventh in the jianshu in the boys' 16-18 age category.

Wushu Federation of Malaysia president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt said: "It was a good start for Malaysia and hopefully we will get more gold in the remaining three days of competition.

"We did not set any high expectation as this is the first international competition for our exponents since the last world junior championships in Brasilia four years ago."

More than 800 exponents from 62 countries are competing in the world junior championships in Tangerang.
