Police to strengthen team after ending 32-year Agong's Cup drought

KUALA LUMPUR: The Police rugby squad have no plans to take their foot off the pedal after securing their first Agong's Cup victory in 32 years yesterday.

They defeated defending champions Putrajaya 29-22 in the final at the Perak Rugby Stadium in Ipoh. Police had lost to Putrajaya in the semifinals last year.

Sabah, who did not compete last season, finished third after outclassing Kuala Lumpur 69-19 in the playoff.

Rugby convenor Assistant Commissioner Nasri Mansor today said Police would strengthen their squad and programme.

"Everyone, from the players to the coaching staff and management, is excited with the win.

"This win is the culmination of the hard work we have put into the programme since 2015. Credit must also go to previous (Police) rugby convenors.

"Our (long list) squad this year included 30 players who are also part of the police force.

"They were complemented by four imports and six or seven other local players.

"We will strengthen our squad by scouting for young players in schools and universities.

"Talented players could be absorbed into the police force, so they can work for the police and develop their rugby skills.

"We are looking to improve our coaching by sending coaches for more courses as well as by bringing in foreign coaches to share their knowledge (with locals)."

K. Dinesvaran, 35, played a key role for Police and was named man of the match in the final.

Nasri said: "Dinesvaran has told to us that he wants to retire and is looking to transition to coaching next season.

"We will approach him, and hopefully, he will still be with us as either a player or coach next year."

He expressed his gratitude to the Police leadership and the team's sponsors.

"We received about RM300,000 in sponsorship for this season, which was important for us to run the Agong's Cup programme

"Hopefully, we can secure more sponsorship for next season, which will strengthen the team."

Police won the inaugural edition of the Agong's Cup in 1983. They also won in 1985 and 1991.
