Misfiring SMG look to rediscover form at M5 World Championship

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian side Team SMG will be aiming to pick themselves up before bidding adieu to the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) M5 World Championship in Manila.

SMG's hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages are now hanging by a thread following back-to-back defeats in the ongoing tournament.

They lost to Filipino side Blacklist International (2-1) at the EVM Convention Centre yesterday and earlier lost their opening group B match (2-0) to Turkiye's Fire Flux Esports on Saturday. They are now bottom of the group.

SMG will play Brazilian side RRQ Akira in their final group match tomorrow. They need to win the match and expect the other match results to go their way. Only the top two in the group advance to the knockout stage.

SMG coach Ren Paolo Villanueva believes his charges need to bounce back mentally.

"We have one last match. First of all, we need to correct the mistakes. We will review it," said Ren Paolo, better known as coach Pao.

"We need a win against RRQ Akira. We need to be prepared mentally after losing back-to-back. It's harder in the group now because of the defeats."

SMG qualified for the world meet after securing one of two wild card slots last month. This is their second appearance at the World Championship after making their debut in Singapore two years ago.

Fellow Malaysia side HomeBois will be looking to secure their second win in the tournament when they face Russia's Deus Vult in Group D tomorrow.

HomeBois defeated Indonesia's Geek Fam 2-0 in their first match on Saturday.
