6 Myanmar courts on watchdog corruption list

YANGON: A local corruption watchdog has set its sights on six courts in several towns.

According to The Myanmar Times, the Yangon Watch had monitored the courts for the past three years and found corruption among court officials.

Yangon Watch founder Daw Nyo Nyo Thin said the courts were located in the North and South Okkalapa, Yankin, Bahan, East and North Dagon townships, with North Okkalapa’s court allegedly being the worst of the five “Bribery is the most common form of corruption found in these courts. Yankin and Bahan township courts are not as bad, but still need monitoring,” she said.

The watchdog claimed officials “used large amounts of money to negotiate with judges and police to get bail”.

Daw added that some of the courts charged exorbitant fees for photocopying legal documents, sometimes as much as five times the regular fee.
