Japanese prime minister calls for immediate evacuation of coastal areas

KUALA LUMPUR: Following the earthquake that hit Japan, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has called on residents of affected areas to evacuate immediately.

"..In areas where tsunamis are expected, I would like to request that they evacuate as soon as possible," he said in Tokyo, as reported by Japan Times.

The tsunami warning for Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Yamagata prefectures warned people to quickly leave coastal areas, as 1.2 meter waves reached Noto Peninsula's Wajima Port in Ishikawa , NHK reported.

The highest level tsunami warning is equal to the one issued after the March 2011 quake.

According to the Meteorological Agency, people who encounter a tsunami of over a meter are considered "highly likely to be unable to stand, with possibility of death."

NHK reported that the height of the tsunami at Wajima Port has been on the rise since the initial waves, although the precise measurements are yet to be determined.
