Watch: Ferris wheel glitch causes passenger spillage in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ferris wheel is hardly the amusement park ride of choice for hardcore adrenaline junkies – but for some in Indonesia on Sunday, a laid-back ride on a “giant wheel” turned into a nerve-racking, life-or-death experience.

In an incident at the Sekaten Night Market in Yogyakarta on Nov 11, a mechanical glitch caused several cabins to tip over, spilling their occupants, Says reported.

The harrowing event was caught on videos which have since gone viral on social media.

One of the clips shows the Ferris wheel spinning before grinding to a halt, causing three gondolas to tip over and another to overturn completely.

Onlookers at the park scream as occupants of the overturned car – a family of three, including a boy holding a red balloon – fall out of their seats and onto the car’s roof.

Luckily, the passengers were quickly saved by several spider-like park employees who, with great agility, clambered over the wheel’s spokes and went from gondola to gondola, rescuing terrified riders.

According to Says, Yogyakarta police spokesperson Adj. Senior Commander Yulianto said no one was injured in the dramatic incident.
