Drunk Indian nurse decapitates baby during delivery, leaves head in womb

KUALA LUMPUR: It reads like the subplot of a horror novel.

A male nurse at a hospital in India is accused of having been drunk while attending to a baby’s delivery and horrifically botching the procedure.

The nurse at the Ramgarh Community Health Centre in Rajasthan pulled at the baby so hard on Jan 6 that he broke it in two, with only the headless torso emerging from the womb, the Hindustan Times reported.

Not wanting to be found out, the nurse surreptitiously deposited the dismembered body at the hospital’s mortuary, and without informing his superiors, instructed the woman’s family to take her to another hospital.

The woman, who was by then in critical condition, was transferred to the Jawahar Hospital where doctors who were battling to save her life were horrified to find her baby’s head and placenta still in the womb.

Gynaecologist Dr Ravindra Sankhla briefed the family of the situation, and the woman, identified as Dikhsha Kanwar, was moved yet again to the Jodhpur Hospital, where she is now fighting for her life.

According to the Hindustan Times, investigators learned from Dikhsha’s husband, Tilok Bhati, that the nurse in Ramgarh was visibly drunk during the delivery; and that the man in charge of the Health Centre, Dr Nikhil Sharma, was not around during the procedure.

When questioned by investigators, the nurse in question simply handed them the baby’s decapitated body.

No arrest has been made so far.
