(Showbiz) Netflix debuts Harith Iskander in first regional comedy special

KUALA LUMPUR: Internet entertainment service Netflix is launching its first original comedy from Southeast Asia with Malaysia's very own Harith Iskander.

His hour-long stand-up comedy show is “I Told You So,” and it sees the Malaysian “Godfather of Stand-up Comedy” presenting his distinct blend of humour that tackles everything from family drama, awkward dating experiences, to social and cultural issues that Malaysians and Singaporeans encounter.

“I’m delighted and honoured to be the first comedian from Malaysia to be a part of Netflix’s original production, and bring Asian stand-ups to the global stage,” said Harith.

“We chose to work with Netflix not only because of its vast reach to audiences around the world, but also because of how open they are in embracing our unique humour.”

Since its launch in 190 countries in early 2016, Netflix has been expanding its content library and it has original productions in over 15 countries including Japan, South Korea, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Netflix Asia head of international originals Erika North said: “We are very excited to unveil the new Asian comedy specials and introduce top-notch local talent like Harith to audiences worldwide.

“Ultimately, we believe in compelling stories that transcend borders, and we are giving them the creative freedom and the global distribution platform to bring that vision to life.”

In addition to Harith, Netflix is also bringing Singaporean comedian Fakkah Fuzz and Malaysian Kavin Jay to global screens.

The three comedy specials they star in are Harith Iskander’s “I Told You So” (Jan 19), Fakkah Fuzz’s “Almost Banned” (Jan 26) and Kavin Jay’s “Everybody Calm Down!” (Feb 2).
