#Showbiz: Sharifah Amani supports investigations into alleged Finas corruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Award-winning actress Sharifah Amani thanks Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo for his swift action calling for investigations into alleged corruption at the National Film Development Corporation (Finas).

“May justice prevail. Thank you, sir," tweeted Amani last Tuesday.

Gobind recently said his Ministry would not compromise nor protect anyone should there be elements of corruption found in any agency under its purview.

He confirmed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had raided Finas on June 7, and this had to do with several allocations the corporation had received.

Amani’s message of support to the Minister was given the thumbs-up by Netizens, including filmmaker Rewan Ishak.

Rewan tweeted: “Previous Ministers did nothing when we filmmakers made noise about alleged abuses in the corporation.

“Films did not do well despite changes in its directors-general.

“Now Gobind is Minister and within 90 days, the MACC is investigating Finas. Syabas!

“I hope no more ex-contractors in polo shirts and dark glasses, with support letters from Wakil Rakyat, get money from the filmmakers’ fund.”

An anonymous Netizen tweeted: “Many lousy films have been produced despite the fund. I strongly believe movies help the development of society, enough of low class, insulting entertainment. We want a world class new Malaysia!”

The Netizen also called on Malaysians to reactivate the #AuditFinas hashtag, to “weed out corrupt people who take away opportunities from genuine filmmakers”.

Gobind explained that the MACC would look at the manner in which allocations to Finas were used, and added that corruption weakened competition for the industry’s growth.

Meanwhile, Finas director-general Datuk Fauzi Ayob said the corporation would not compromise with individuals deemed to have been involved in leakage of funds.
