#Showbiz: Diana Danielle takes on Puteri

SOME notable stars in the entertainment industry today like Nur Fazura Sharifuddin, Sazzy Falak and Ashraf Sinclair will always be synonymous with Gol & Gincu — 2005 film and TV series which ran from 2006 to 2007, and directed by Bernard Chauly.

Moviegoers still remember the film about a spoilt girl named Puteri (Fazura) who is determined to win back her boyfriend Eddy (Ashraf) by taking up futsal, a sport he is crazy about.

The film created a pop culture phenomenon and it continues to be regarded as an iconic movie despite its simple story.

Fast forward to today, the filmmakers of the original movie, Red Communications, has announced a reboot, Gol & Gincu Vol. 2.

But it will feature a new cast while maintaining only a couple of its original members like Sazzy Falak and Sharifah Amani.

Diana Danielle and Ummi Nazeera take on the lead role as Zak and Zakiah respectively while the role of hero goes to Shafiq Kyle.

NOT A SEQUEL

Many assumed that the reboot is a sequel to the original movie, but its producer Lina Tan stressed that the storyline differs from its predecessor.

The second movie follows the lives of self-centred Zak and Zakiah. They think the world revolves around them.

The story sees a twist when the two get caught up in a cat fight witnessed and filmed by their college peers.

The videos go viral and both face disciplinary action by the university, and their punishment is community service.

When they head to a home for troubled youths managed by Jijie (Amani), conflicts arise between them when they try to help Jijie and the troubled teens.

“The reboot highlights current social problems faced by youths, which surrounds the abuse of social media,” said Tan.

Diana who plays Puteri, the role which previously played by Fazura, said that she could never outshine Mrs Fattah Amin.

However, she knows that people are bound to compare them eventually.

“I can’t stop that from happening but they need to know that this isn’t a sequel. I’m not trying to compete with anyone, I can never outdo Faz because it’s she who made Puteri iconic,” said the mother of two who is a close buddy of Fazura.

LOVE AS THE MAIN THEME

“The main theme of this film is relevant to the times. It talks about the abuse of social media and we tend to be too reliant on technology,” said Diana.

“People care too much about their image on social media but are not strong enough to handle criticism. Nowadays, people are too transparent as they share everything online! Some even go as far as record a suicide attempt.

“Our obsession with the Internet is a serious problem.”

AWKWARD PHASE

Diana admitted that she didn’t instantly hit it off with Ummi in the early stages of production.

“I’ve never acted with her before so it took us a while to break the ice and build a strong chemistry before the cameras began rolling.

“She has a certain style of acting so I needed time to match my acting style to hers. But everything went well in the end as we were given a month to rehearse the lines together before stepping on the set.

“It was the same with Syafiq since we have never worked together before.”

SHORT HAIR

Diana had always sported long hair since her early days in the entertainment scene, but the wife of popular actor Farid Kamil did not have any regrets chopping off her locks for the role.

“It’s just hair, it’ll grow back!” she said with a laugh.

“I’ve always wanted to cut my hair but was just too scared and didn’t have a reason to do so. So I was more than happy to get the haircut in order to play the character!”
