#Showbiz: No room for mistakes

Misha, Noryn and Siti Sarah will soon be harmonising together in a mash-up at the Soul Sisters Concert

FANS of singers Misha Omar, Noryn Aziz and Siti Sarah Raissuddin can expect a “mash-up” segment from the talented singers at the two-night Soul Sisters Concert that kicks off on April 5.

Datuk Syafinaz Selamat is the vocal coach of the trio for the concert. The 46-year-old artiste, who is also a music lecturer at UiTM, points out that “ a mash-up is very tricky, requiring skill and precision.”

Harmony and cooperation are key to great mash-ups, she adds. “As the word ‘sisters’ suggests, it will be the three songstresses uniting to deliver a performance which showcases their vocals as a group, not as solo artistes.

She continues, “Each has a unique voice, but getting perfect harmony requires hard work and days of intensive training.” As their vocal coach, Syafinaz’s job is to ensure that the singers put aside their egos and work in unison.

ACTING AS A GROUP

The trio are feeling some anxiety now that rehearsals are in full swing.

“All this while, we’ve been comfortable as solo performers. We need to keep reminding ourselves that we need to think and act as a group. It’s a challenge to have this new mindset, and I’m already feeling the difficulty,” says Misha, 37.

She adds: “When you’re performing at your solo show, if you fumble, you only have yourself to blame. But for this concert, there is no room for mistakes. The artistes’ reputation is in your hands too.”

Noryn agrees.

“When I perform solo with my band, sometimes it can turn out differently from the set list. It goes off-tangent with an impromptu performance on the side. But for this concert, everything is set for a synchronised performance,” says the 42-year-old.

Siti Sarah, 34, chips in, saying: “I’m glad I’m a part of this concert with Misha and Noryn. Having known each other for a long time, we know our individual vocal characteristics. So that makes us very conscious of our responsibility to work together.

“We get along marvelouslly, so much so that sometimes we know what the other is thinking.”

With a total of 33 songs arranged by Sze Wan and Datuk Nasser Abu Kassim, Soul Sisters Concert will be held at Istana Budaya.
