#Showbiz: Netizens not amused with Namewee's April Fool death hoax

KUALA LUMPUR: Many Netizens are not amused with hip-hop singer, director, producer and comedian Wee Meng Chee or Namwee's latest April Fool joke.

In fact he has been slammed by them for "faking his death" on social media.

The 40-year-old Muar-born entertainer released a brief video of him "dead" and lying in a coffin, the subject of a bogus funeral to promote his new song I Am Gone.

The song was released at 4.44pm on April 4.

In his caption to the video and accompanying photos of his "funeral" he said: "Do not fear death, but rather the unlived life".

The "funeral" scene also showed information on its venue and visitation hours.

Another scene showed a reporter attempting to verify Namewee's "death" and reprimanding another man for "wasting the nation's resources".

The following day, Namewee revealed he was "all right" in a social media post.

Nevertheless, his worried fans commented that his joke was "too much".

In response to the backlash, Namewee said that those who were disappointed wih the gimmick were "fake fans" and that true fans would have understood its importance.

"I feel that this society needs more humour and creativity. I'm using my own money to shine a light on something I find meaningful," he said.

"It is my statement about the importance of pre-planning for one's demise."
