Tension mounts as supporters of Anwar, Saiful camp

PUTRAJAYA: Tensions rose higher today as supporters of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Saiful Bukhari Azlan began camping on opposite sides of the Palace of Justice here.

Anwar arrived at the court complex here at about 9 am for the second day of his final appeal to overturn a conviction for sodomising his former aide, Saiful Bukhari, in 2008.

Upon his arrival, a group of Anwar supporters faced off against police as they tried to break through the barriers set up along the left side of the court.

Meanwhile, some 500 supporters of Saiful Bukhari have begun gathering on the other end of the court, carrying picket signs and banners calling for "Justice for Saiful".

Police presence around the court was noticeably higher compared to yesterday, with members of the Federal Reserve Unit on standby for any signs of unrest.
