KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will be part of the Malaysian team to carry out investigations at the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine.
Acting Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said he was really proud when the announcement was made by the Netherlands prime minister (in Putrajaya yesterday) on Malaysia's participation in the investigations into the MH17 crash.
He said PDRM could play an important role in the effort, especially in the area of crime investigation to determine who were actually responsible for the downing of the MAS aircraft.
"We (PDRM) are of the view that we should be part of the investigation team as there were many Malaysian victims in the crash and the aircraft belonged to Malaysia.
"It is apt that we be accepted as part of the international investigation team, apart from the Netherlands, Australia, United Kingdom and others," he told reporters, here, today.
Yesterday at a joint news conference in Putrajaya, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte announced that Malaysia was appointed as a full member of the investigation team headed by the Netherlands, to probe the MH17 crash.
Rutte had met with Najib during his one-day official visit to Malaysia, the first for him, since he was appointed as Netherlands prime minister on Oct 14, 2010.
Both leaders stated their commitment to working closely in the investigations into the MH17 tragedy and to bring the culprits to justice.
The MAS aircraft, with 283 passengers and 15 crew members onboard, crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 while en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam .
It is believed to have been shot down over the troubled area and the crash victims included 193 Dutch nationals and 44 Malaysians. - BERNAMA
