Malaysia and Bangladesh to strengthen bilateral ties

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia and Bangladesh would further strengthen their bilateral ties through greater cooperation in various economic sectors.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said to promote the expansion of the bilateral trade and investment cooperation, both countries agreed to initiate preparatory works towards a bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

He said Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also agreed to consider the formation of the Bangladesh-Malaysia investment forum to enhance investment cooperation.

"The discussions held was fruitful and it was in depth as we spoke about areas which we could enhance our cooperation in, such as power and energy and human resources development," Najib said.

He also said that four new projects were discussed with Sheikh Hasina among them included the development of low cost housing and a coal power plant in Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina is on a three-day official visit to Malaysia and it was to reciprocate the visit made by Najib in Nov last year.
