Fire destroys supermarket in Kangar

KANGAR: A supermarket located in between two petrol stations at Jalan Kaki Bukit here went up in flames today.

The 2.30pm fire had destroyed about 80 per cent of the single-storey supermarket.

However, no casualty was reported as the supermarket was closed for Friday prayers during the incident.

State Fire and Rescue Department operation assistant director Mohd Firdaus Yusop said a total of 39 officers and personnel were deployed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 2.29pm.

He said the team, assisted by 31 volunteer firefighters, managed to control the fire by 3.14pm although they faced difficulty due to low water pressure.

“Our main focus is to prevent the fire from spreading to the Petronas petrol station located about five metres away from the supermarket and also the Caltex station which is about 20m away.

“Fortunately the premise was empty when it caught fire as it was closed for Friday prayers.

"The cause of the fire and the losses are still being investigated,” he told reporters at the scene.
