New rating system to grade eateries: City Hall

KUALA LUMPUR: City Hall has come up with a rating system to assess the quality of food and beverage outlets to position the capital as a food paradise.

The rating of the outlets ranging from fine dining spots to restaurants and cafes would be assessed by judges roped in by the authority.

A rating of 1-5 will be awarded based on a score of a 100. Premises would be judged based on overall food quality, cleanliness, service, innovation, variety, decor as well as facilities.

A rating of one satisfies minimal standards, two is sufficient, three is good while four is excellent and five is outstanding.

The overall rating of the outlets would then be displayed at the entrance of the facility.

A source said the system dubbed the Kuala Lumpur Food & Beverage Quality Assurance

said assessment would start within the next two months.

"It is not unlike the Michelin Star or the TripAdvisor recommendation.

"It is voluntary as proprietors can apply for their restaurants to be assessed. It however differs from our cleanliness ratings of premises where outlets are given grades," he said.

He however said that all outlets must be cleared by the authority's Health and Environmental Department for health and safety standards to even qualify for an assessment, done at the restaurant's request.

The system would be launched by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib at the Kuala Lumpur Library later today.

Earlier a Chinese New Year open house was held at the same premises.
