KL's cycling master plan on the cards

KUALA LUMPUR: City Hall is in the midst of preparing a bicycle lane network master plan.

Its deputy director-general (management) Datuk Mohd Najib Mohd said the plan is expected to be ready by year end.

“The plan aims for better connectivity for cyclists by integrating the lanes with other facilities like bicycle racks at LRT stations.

“It will cover the existing bicycle lanes and future projects. We are also looking at areas that we can develop as cycling lanes including lands under the TNB’s (Tenaga Nasional Bhd) transmission line. The network is expected to cover all parliamentary constituencies here.

“We also plan to add route signs along the existing cycling routes. The new routes identified in the plan will be connected to schools and train stations to encourage more people to ride,” said Najib when met after attending KL’s Car-Free Morning event earlier.

On the event, he said some 3,500 people had gathered and joined the various activities including cycling and games for children.

“Today’s event was different as there was Zumba dance accompanied by Raya songs and dodol making as we are still in festive mood. We will continue to look for ideas to include cultural elements such as this in the future events.

The three existing lanes are available from Dataran Merdeka to Mid Valley; Taman Melati to Wangsa Maju and PPR Batu Muda to Taman Metropolitan Kepong (90 per cent completed).
