Penang Second Bridge closed for emergency drill

GEORGE TOWN: The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (JK2PP) or Penang Second Bridge was temporarily closed today for a "full-scale emergency drill".

The closure took place from 9am until 11am.

During the closure, motorists were redirected to the Penang Bridge and ferry as alternatives to cross over to the island from the mainland.

The emergency drill was held by the state’s National Security Council with the cooperation of other agencies and JK2PP authorities.

As part of the training exercise, the authorities of JK2PP staged a scenario involving an oil tanker, a liquid petroleum gas carrier, a truck and a bus laden with passengers and two motorcycles.

According to JK2PP corporate communications chief Azizi Azizan, the drill included smoke simulation and a plethora of emergency response vehicles.

The exercise involved police force, fire and rescue department officials and medical teams.
