Dang Wangi police's 'Men In Blue' strategy pays off

KUALA LUMPUR: Dang Wangi police's 'Men in Blue' crime prevention approach paid off handsomely when the district's crime index recorded a 13.6 per cent drop last year.

Dang Wangi police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainol Samah said, following high street crime rates in 2014, his men had beefed up patrol in several areas especially in the Kuala Lumpur city centre and Jalan Ampang.

“We also placed several officers in front of the Rennaisance Hotel, under operation ‘Op Payung’ for omnipresence as well as periodic patrols at the area.

“There is also a mobile police station parked just outside the Corus Hotel in Jalan Ampang to prevent criminal activities especially involving foreign tourists there,” he said.

His team, said Zainol, was also placed in Jalan Ampang and the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre to gather intelligence and conduct surveillance on suspicious characters.

“A total of 46 General Operations Force personnel were also roped in to track down and arrest criminals.

“A total of 1,353 people were checked with 94 people arrested for various offences.”

Zainol said with the ‘Men in Blue’ approach, violent crimes in the district decreased by 378 cases, or 20.1 per cent last year compared to 2014.

Property crimes reported last year totaled 270, a drop of 9.3 per cent.

Street crimes had decreased 37.7 per cent.
